Cameras and Optical Devices

By Angela Oliver

There are many different types of cameras and optical devices. Here is a look at some of these devices and their uses.

Binoculars- Binoculars, also known as field glasses, are devices that provide a three dimensional view of images at different levels of magnification. Hand held binoculars can be found in several sizes. Small opera glasses are used in theatres, while bird watchers and hunters use binocular glasses with better magnification and more expensive binocular technology. Binoculars are also used by astronomers to search for cosmic objects such as comets, supernovas, nebulas, and galaxies. Astronomers use both portable and giant binoculars for observation.

Telescopes- Telescopes are the devices that allow for the viewing of remote objects and are used in binoculars and camera lenses to provide this function. These types of telescopes are specifically named optical telescopes and work by using a combination of lenses and mirrors to gather and focus light. Other types of telescopes include the radio telescope, which looks similar to a giant satellite dish and gathers data from space satellites and probes. X-ray and gamma ray telescopes are another type used for mainly for satellites orbiting the Earth.

Night Vision Devices- Night vision devices such as night vision goggles, use infrared or thermal night vision technology which senses the thermal signals coming from objects. This type of technology is not essentially considered night vision because the technology is drastically different from crude enhanced spectral range night vision's technology. Image intensifiers are other devices that use a vacuum tube to convert visible light from an object that lets the user see a very dimly lit scene.

Microscopes- Microscopes are optical devices that use technology that dates back over four hundred years. Today's optical microscopes use one or more lenses to produce a magnified image of the objects placed in view. Other technological advanced microscopes include the electron microscope, scanning probe microscope, point projection microscope, acoustic microscope, x-ray microscope, and several more.

There are many methods used to enhance images and view things not visible to the naked human eye. By advances in technology, scientists are able to use optical devices for things never thought possible. And by the same advances, photographers can use cameras to capture images that could only be imagined.
