Are Galileo brand binoculars any use at all for astronomy?

Can you answer McCann's question about Binoculars?:

I recently had the chance to buy a pair of 10×50 porro prism Galileo binoculars for $40. Do people think it's a good buy? And if it isn't in the major league of good instruments, will it still be of some use and fun?

Cheers all.
I know the value of binoculars in astronomy, especially for newbies like myself! But I'm really wondering about the specifics of the brand of Galileo instruments and whether any amount of money for a pair would be a waste.

there are alot of things that even binoculars can reveal to you in the night sky that you wouldn't see otherwise…..

I am not familiar with the brand you mention. Really any binos will show stuff in the sky which you would not see without. The trick with binos is holding them still enough. Best to use a tripod. $40 is a good price for 10 x 50s if it is in good shape. Orion Telescope offers many which are well suited to astronomy, and they offer a lot of good info on features which are desired for astronomy.
