What is better for viewing landscapes? A telescope or binoculars?
Can you answer Hal W's question about Binoculars?:
I live in a skyscraper in a large city in paradise, with incredible vistas of mountains and the ocean. Which will be better for viewing my surroundings up close?
Rifle Scopes

Binoculars are good because you get a 3-D view. However, telescopes can be purchased which are a lot stronger (ie closer view) than your standard binoculars.
Binoculars are the best choice here —
Search out the right power for your particular use — you can do this first hand at sporting goods stores near you !!
Telescopes are good for what they do — which is giving extreme magnifications where needed — some even come with zoom capabilities — but these carry price tags that zoom as well !!
The main reason Binoculars are best for your task is that they provide a relatively wide angle view.
Astronomical telescopes are not suited for terrestrial viewing because they invert the image either side to side or upside down.
This makes no difference when viewing objects in the sky, since there is no up or down in space.
Be aware that binoculars with magnification of 10X or more require a mount of some sort since they are very heavy and difficult to hold still enough to be able to get a good view.
If maximum Magnification is your aim,( it really shouldn't be) take a look at Spotting Scopes, they are like Telescopes for Terrestrial viewing.
Take a look at Orion Telescope's catalog, they have one of the largest selections of quality Binoculars and spotting scopes around, along with lots of good info on what to look for in quality optics.
And their prices are very reasonable.
